Elect Independent Candidates to the WBAI LSB

Meet The Candidate – Ken Laufer

Laufer, Ken3

Candidate Statement 2016

I am Ken Laufer, the current secretary of the LSB.

I’m running for a second term because WBAI must never, never, never be sold or traded to a lower spot on the NYC radio dial. NYC without a progressive radio station is unthinkable!

And we must remain right in the middle of the commercial dial, a non-commercial, left, in-your-face presence in a sea of capitalism.

Yet some Pacifica National Board members are considering selling WBAI, and I am not sure of the loyalty of some local LSB members.

But you can be 100% sure if you vote for Ken Laufer and other Indy candidates, that we will fight hard to save WBAI.

To do that, we must fully implement all the ideas of a very successful marketer among us in order to gain more listener-supporters. We must insist that WBAI management do this now!!!

You may have heard that some LSB members have stayed away from meetings. That is because a member insists on being seated, illegally, in our opinion. The court will decide this issue.

As LSB secretary, I have always submitted monthly minutes, unlike another Pacifica secretary.

If you listen to NPR, our closest competitor in so-called public radio (so-called in NPR’s instance!) you will see the crucial necessity for WBAI as a hub for truly progressive ideas and center for activist information.

On NPR, you’re not going to hear regular critiques of capitalism or other issues that are not controversially trendy –the only kind of controversy allowed on NPR.

For example, only on WBAI (and Pacifica stations) will you hear that Indian Point Nuclear Plant, 30 miles from NYC , has 100 health and safety exemptions, or about the vicious war against alternative medicine waged by mainstream medicine (Sloan Kettering is an advertiser on NPR), or where pro-BDS activists can rally, or about non-defense department militarism in US agencies.

Anyway, I probably don’t have to convince you of WBAIs importance.

But when there is even the shadow of a chance of WBAI being sold, it is crucial to vote for Indys like Ken me, who we are sure will fight to never ever permit a sale, and who urge the use of professional, experienced marketers to raise money for WBAI.

Even though it is not that good to have one person chiefly responsible for an organization’s survival, that is our situation today.

So we may as well, in fact must make use of Gary Nulls huge audience to better WBAI’s desperate plight.

We must restore the Friday edition of the Gary Null Show, and allow him to fund raise every day during fund drives.

Great pressure must be put on WBAI management to allow this! It is insane not to!!!

Please contact me at jassiken@yahoo.com for more information or to tell me what is on your mind.

Save WBAI!!!! Vote Indy!!!!!

This is not an official Pacifica Foundation website nor an official website of any of the five Pacifica Radio Stations (KPFA Radio, KPFK Radio, KPFT Radio, WBAI Radio, WPFW Radio). Opinions and facts alleged on this site belong to the author(s) of the website only and should NOT be assumed to be true or to reflect the editorial stance or policy of the Pacifica Foundation, or any of the five Pacifica Radio Stations (KPFA Radio, KPFK Radio, KPFT Radio, WBAI Radio, WPFW Radio), or the opinions of its management, Pacifica National Board, station staff or other listener members.

In what ways is the station moving in a positive direction, that you would want to continue or perhaps improve?

It has James Irsay doing music programming. Bravo!

In what ways is the station moving in a negative direction, that you would want to stop or change? What changes would you work for?

Limiting Gary Null to 4 days, and not having him fund raise. This is crazy! He should be allowed to go back to broadcasting on WBAI 5 days, and allowed to fund raise fully.

What key experience, connections, skills or traits would you bring to the Local Station Board to advance the station’s mission?

I love WBAI and all it stands for.

What ideas do you have for helping the station and the Pacifica Foundation meet the financial challenges currently being faced?

Use Steve Brown ideas. Listen to him and do everything he suggests!!!!

  1. I moved my listenership from wnyc to wbai when I got that wnyc supports Clinton and rarely mentions Bernie.

I am a technologist, entrepreneur and volunteer in NYC prisons.

The support I can offer is in technology and management.

I would love to meet you and see what I can do to support you and the station.

    Does it work for you?

    Thank you
